A Creative Arts Education Approach to Cultural Storytelling

Hi, I am Ranjini.
Hi, I am Ranjini. I am a creative arts educator and the founder of Salangai Stories—an initiative dedicated to cultivating a community of embodied storytellers.
My Work
My work centres on Bharatanatyam-inspired storytelling programs that integrate movement, narrative, and critical thinking. These programs are designed to create literature-rich environments where stories are not only read or heard, but physically experienced. By bringing together dance, drama, and language, I support learners in developing voice, interpretation, and expressive confidence. At the heart of my practice is the belief that learning deepens when it is embodied.

My Background
I am trained as a History and English educator. I possess a strong interest in how stories shape our understanding of the world. I am also a disciple of the late Smt. Neila Sathyalingam, Cultural Medallion recipient, and a former company dancer with Apsaras Arts Dance Company. Through this work, I have represented Singapore at arts festivals across Australia, Cambodia, China, India, Indonesia, and the United Kingdom. These experiences continue to inform my work at the intersection of arts practice and education.
My Philosophy
Storytelling is not only something we consume—it is something we inhabit. Through movement, rhythm, and reflection, I invite learners to step into stories, embody perspectives, and discover new ways of seeing, feeling, and expressing.

Salangai Stories
Salangai Stories is a space where tradition meets inquiry, and where storytelling becomes an embodied, creative practice. It is grounded in Bharatanatyam, while remaining open, exploratory, and responsive to diverse learners and contexts.
